PowerStore Expansion
The PowerStore systems can use two types of expansion enclosures to increase storage capacity: the 25 x 2.5-inch SAS expansion enclosure and the 24 x 2.5-inch NVMe expansion enclosure.
Both expansion enclosures are designed to increase the storage capacity of a PowerStore system, but they use different drive types and connection technologies. The SAS expansion enclosure is a more traditional SAS-based system, while the NVMe expansion enclosure provides a more modern, high-performance, end-to-end NVMe.
SAS Expansion
The SAS expansion enclosure uses SAS SSDs to increase capacity, and it houses 25 x 2.5-inch drives. This enclosure connects to the base enclosure via 12 Gb/s SAS ports. It is a 2U enclosure, and each enclosure is powered by two redundant power supplies.
The SAS expansion enclosure has a link control card (LCC) that supports, controls and monitors the enclosure and is the primary interconnect management element.
SAS SSDs supplement the storage tier for PowerStore, and they are used for user data or metadata. Up to three 25-drive SAS expansion enclosures can be added to a PowerStore appliance
NVMe Expansion
The NVMe expansion enclosure uses NVMe SSDs for storage expansion and houses 24 x 2.5-inch NVMe drives. The enclosure connects to the base enclosure via 100 GbE QSFP ports. They require the base enclosure to have the v2 embedded module and a 100GbE 2-port card.
The NVMe expansion enclosure includes two Link Controller Cards (LCCs), each with an Access Module and a Drive Interface Board. Up to three 24-drive NVMe expansion enclosures can be added to a PowerStore appliance
