Transceivers Jargon Explained

Shopping for transceivers needn’t be daunting. As mentioned before, there are compatibility tools to help you see which ones are useable in your unit but once you break down the terminology it becomes a bit simpler.

Generally, transceivers can come in SMF (single-mode fibre) and MMF (multi-mode fibre) types. MMF types have a wider core for signals to travel through making them better for shorter distances, whilst SMF has a smaller core which lessens the distortion of signals travelling through it, making it better for long range transmissions.

Looking at the QSFP-100G-SR4 and the QSFP-100G-LR4, the naming conventions are made to help in seeing the features immediately. The first section denotes the Form Factor of the transceiver, the second is the supported speed and lastly, SR or LR helps to tell if it is suitable for short- or long-range signals.
